A Message from Ken Rogge, Senior Producer, Veterans Radio

In 1978, a few men and woman banded together in Washington DC to lay the groundwork for what has become the Vietnam Veterans of America. The VVA has grown to become a national organization, but the road has not been smooth. Over the years they fought here at home for the sake of those with whom they had fought side by side in a distance land.  Now that we have a whole new generation of warriors serving our country, the VVA ensures these men and women will not be forgotten.

We have an interview by Veterans Radio that describes the history of the VVA.  With hosts Dale Throneberry and Gary Lillie and guests Keith King, Marc Leepson, and Mokie Porter you will hear about the history and the future of the Vietnam Veterans of America. Truly worthwhile.

Radio interviews about the history of the VVA

In war, heroism often become routine. Soldiers are known to say, "Well, that was just my job." But an experienced interviewer can sense the heroics of an action and bring it out through carefully structured questions.

The programs listed below are fine examples of interviews of Veterans done by the staff of Veterans Radio. Dale Throneberry, Bob Gould, Ken Rogge, and Gary Lillie have conducted these interview of a few years. With the help of Gary Lillie we have selected interviews that deal with topics that are relevant to the Vietnam War.

Here you find programs that are especially important to Vietnam Veterans, but you find a lot more programs available on the Veterans Radio Web site.

Why Vietnam Matters -- Part I

Vietnam veterans are special veterans. They fought a war that was not just a simple matter of conquering territory or defeating enemy combatants. The Vietnam War was a war for the hearts and minds of the people, not just a war to conquer land. This program is an interview with someone who was there from the very beginning--Rufas Phillips, author of the book "Why Vietnam Matters: An Eyewitness Account of Lessons Not Learned." Mr. Phillips mentions the importance of what he calls "the X factor," which represents the feelings of the Vietnamese people. This is a great lesson in history and foreign affairs. Enjoy!

Why Vietnam Matters -- Part II

Part II of the interview covers major strategies employed in Vietnam. Mr. Phillips discusses the strategic hamlet program,  the decisions made by US authorities about the Vietnam operations, and lessons that still apply today in current US conflicts worldwide, such as Iraq and Afghanistan.
