My first year was spent going through basic training at Lackland Air Force Base,San Antonio, Texas from January 21, 1964 to March 15, 1964. I was sent to Greenville AFB, Greenville, Mississippi and graduated early from a basic anatomy and physiology course and sent to Gunter AFB, Montgomery, Alabama arriving April 1964. First we were joined by about 15 Air National Guard people to form a class of about 30 taking phase 1 of Medical Laboratory, which consisted of classroom and labs with written exams. After graduating from phase 1 we were either sent to our first permanent duty station for on the job training or like me assigned to phase2. I then went to Lackland AFB, San Antonio, Texas Wilford Hall USAF Hospital for 36 additional weeks of classroom in combination with on actual working in each section of the medical laboratory, I then went before a board to be certified and given an AFSC of 90450 (Medical Laboratory Specialist). My first permanent duty assignment was to Pease AFB, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. I worked in and outpatient clinic with Sergeant First Class Berdell Williams as my NCOIC. In November 1966 I was transferred to Offutt AFB, Ehrling Berquist USAF Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. There I worked under Chief Master Sergeant Ed Piekarski until I was separated from the Air Force on January 19, 1968.
