Hospital Corpsman Third Class Scott Philip Smith was born on May 30, 1947 in Ann Arbor to Mr. Philip H. of Grass Lake, Michigan and Mrs. Ralph (Jeane) Foreman, Jr. of Northville, Michigan. Scott is a 1965 graduate of Chelsea High School where he was on the track team and the High School Band. He also attended Grand Valley Junior College in Grand Rapids, Michigan before he entered the Navy on March 17, 1967.

Hospital Corpsman Third Class Smith began his tour of duty in Quang Tri Province, South Vietnam on June 3, 1969 serving as a Corpsman with Headquarters and Service Company, 3rd Battalion, III Marine Amphibious Forces. Scott was killed on September 17, 1969 as a result of an explosive device.

 
 Scott Phillip Smith is survived by his parents, a half-brother and a half-sister. He lived 22 years, 3 months and 17 days. Scott's name is listed on the Vietnam Memorial in Ypsilanti Township under Chelsea. His name also appears on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC on Panel 18W Line 106.

I was the senior corpsman for L 3/3 during July '69. 'Scotty' showed me the ropes and made me feel welcome. I was home on emergency leave when L 3/3 was overrun. I believe this was one of the last major fire fights the Marines had in northern I Corps. I was so impressed with Scott and the other corpsman of L Co. that I wrote our Chief corpsman while home and told him they should all receive meritorious promotions. RIP Scotty and Semper Fi!

Scott was my best friend growing up together in Chelsea, Michigan. I was with 3/7 India Co. 1st Mar Div in Vietnam about the same time period Scott was there. We talked about meeting in-country but never got together. Scott was killed 9-17-69 about a month after I arrived back in the States. He died saving Marines as a Navy Corpsman. He was the best. Scotty was a corpsman in my platoon
"Doc Scotty" was a true hero! He died trying to save the lives of Marines in Lima 3/3, 3rd MAR DIV when we were overrun in the hills west of The Rockpile. I pray he is at peace now.

Scotty taught me alot of what I was to do as a Marine Corpsman. I learned more after his death. I was wounded two days after he was killed on the ridge.
